The Learning Success Program
Apostle Paul writes,

"I want you to know how much I am struggling for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally. My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments. For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how orderly you are and how firm your faith in Christ is." Colossians 2:1-5

Paul's purpose in this letter is "to encourage in heart and unite in love," so that the Laodiceans might have the riches of complete understanding. Crean Lutheran South High School (CLSHS) seeks to fulfill the same purpose through its mission, to Proclaim Jesus Christ through Excellence in Education. An important component at CLSHS is the Learning Success Program (LSP) which serves students who learning differently. Specifically, the LSP supports students with documented learning disabilities (i.e. attention deficit disorders, learning disabilities, or other special education needs) so that their understanding is more complete.

Students who learn differently are supported by the entire Crean Lutheran South community. Beyond teaching faculty who receive specific education and training in teaching to all kinds of minds, Crean Lutheran South High School also employs a credentialed specialist to support students who learn differently. The overarching goal is to assist students to grow closer in their relationship with Jesus Christ, while helping them learn how to excel academically.

Families who desire additional support are asked to seek an audience with the Principal, or his designee, to obtain permission for enrollment in the Learning Success Program. This request must be made in writing and in a timely manner to allow appropriate evaluation and consideration prior to enrollment. Recommendation for enrollment in the program is based on the following:
  • A professionally prepared report by a school psychologist or licensed educational psychologist which documents a qualifying disability that includes at least the following:
    • Cognitive Abilities (i.e. Woodcock Johnson Tests of Cognitive Achievement III, Weschler Intelligence scale for Children IV)
    • Academic Achievement (i.e. Woodcock Johnson Tests of Academic Achievement, Wechsler Individual Achievement Test II, or Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement II)
    • Measure of processing capabilities (depending on area of need: auditory processing, visual processing, visual motor processing, attention, conceptualization, association, and/or expression)
    • Behavioral/Social/Emotional Development (i.e. BASC-2, BRIEF)
  • Assessments must be in writing, report the Standardized scores achieved for each of the tests, and state the qualifying diagnosis and the data, which supports the clinician's diagnosis
  • Review of historical and present educational records including past testing history
  • Crean Lutheran South High School placement exam
  • Parent, student, or teacher request
  • Space availability
  • Resources within the scope and training of Learning Success Program to adequately serve student needs
A critical part of this process is the development of an Educational Plan. This Education Plan is based on the psychoeducational report prepared by an educational or school psychologist. As part of the Education Plan, both accommodations and modifications of students’ individual needs can be provided. These accommodations and modifications vary depending upon individual student needs and include but are not limited to:
  • Preferential Seating
  • Extended Time on Tests and Assignments
  • Tests Read Aloud
  • Audio Books
  • Note Takers
  • Use of Laptop
  • Use of Calculator
  • Test Construction & Design modification to Include No Scantron
  • Maintain and Manage Daily Assignment Program/Book
  • Accommodations for Standardized School-wide Testing
  • Accommodations for and College Board Testing (SAT & ACT) pending official College Board/ACT Approval Process.
The Learning Success Program also assists students with organizational skills, daily problem solving, academic support, and post-secondary planning. Students' schedules are designed to assist each student to maximize their potential and to enhance the educational environment within the confines of the master schedule.

All students will fulfill Crean Lutheran South's graduation requirements. If a specific documented disability prohibits a student from fulfilling of a requirement, a written petition must be filed by a student’s parent along with supporting professional documentation to the Principal and Executive Director as to why it is not possible to fulfill the said graduation requirement. Once the petition and supporting documentation are received and processed, a meeting to discuss the petition with the student and the parent(s) will be arranged. If sound rational is supported by professional documentation, then an alternate requirement for graduation will be determined in lieu of the petitioned requirement. Reducing total graduation requirement units is not a suitable remedy to a requirement that cannot be met.

It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, financial aid, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school-related programs.
